Poland / migration case study

There's so much around now that relates to Poland etc - but the Maryport article (below) could be a great little case study as it is focused at such a local scale. The actual piece that ran on Radi... Continue

End of the Pier Show ?

A very useful GUARDIAN article I read on the train home today. Results of a competition. A combination of coasts and rebranding ? The company Urban Splash is one company that I'd like to try and get in touch with and visit some of their schemes which are in various locations around the UK.

BBC Visual weblinks for Going Global module

I have just posted up on the SLN forum a list of url links for various BBC news clips linked to aspects of the global challenge module for Edexcel B and hopefully the Going Global module. Have a look, it should save you some time searching for links.

Slideshare

For those not familiar with SLIDESHARE, it is a website which allows the uploading and sharing of PPT presentations. These can be shared with colleagues, or it allows for peer marking of work by students in other schools...

Alan Doherty is a member of the SAGT committee and runs a website called GEOJUICE.

Just came across a presentation of his on SLIDESHARE which would be good for the… Continue

The £800 million pound railway!

Just missed this on BBC 2, gutted!

A two part programme showing the behind the scenes decision making and changes to St Pancras station. Here is the Tv listings info from the BBC...

A team of spin doctors and marketing gurus have to sell Commercial Director Mike Luddy's vision for St Pancras station. They need to convince press and public that a place synonymous with prostitution, drugs and violent crime has been transformed into the chic destination station for Europe.

Arctic Sea Ice Flash Resource

Really interesting INSET with Cam and Sue last Monday on the Global Warming Hazards Unit. Discussion of the Arctic case study lined up with some publishing work I'm doing for a Geoactive on evidence for global warming. Went looking for a sea ice retreat map and found this rather nice flash page. http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2007/10/01/science/20071002_ARCTIC_GRAPHIC.html#

Difference, Disparity and Inequality

Just looking at the Edexcel Getting Started Guide for Unequal Spaces and it says "create clear definitions of appropriate terms such as disparity, difference and inequality, etc." (p.45). Have to confess I'm struggling with that - anyone got any ideas? - in English language terms they seem to me to mean the same thing, except perhaps difference is not necessarily qualitative (red is different to blue) whereas disparity and inequality suggest one thing is more than the other, not just different? But as a geologist, perhaps I have missed out on some subtlety in the use of these terms by human geographers?

SOW Outline Unit 1

Just and copy and paste from the spec really. Very basic...no reference to wider curriculum links or key skills. Maybe of use to some. Cheers, Adam

Unit 2 - Teaching about Geographical Research / Techniques

I'm just writing dissertation synopses, and justifying qualitative research reminded me of this clip which might be good for the Unit 2, first few lessons: Questionnaires (Yes Prime Minister) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yhN1IDLQjo I saw another on GIS somewhere, but can't find it now Hope this helps, Dan

Unit 1 Going Global case study MTV

Hi. There's a new Unit 1 Going Global case study on Geography in the News, about MTV that is available for RGS-IBG Schools Members (written by the unit 1 principal examiner Simon Oakes). If you aren't members, there are still lots of free articles on globalisation and climate change archived from 2002-2005 (also written by Simon) providing useful background reading, that can be accessed free to all via the green 'News' button on the left hand side of the site. The website yourclimateyourlife has an A-level section that supports Unit 1 too.

Russian Submarine mystery for AS Climate Change

Here are a few resources I made for a taster session a few months ago. It is a mystery based on why the russians planted a flag on the sea bed at the North Pole. I then related this to the Arctic resource rush. I made the video clip in photo story and added the Russian national anthem, though one of my students said this was the Soviet one. Let me know what you think! Garry

Poland / migration case study

There's so much around now that relates to Poland etc - but the Maryport article (below) could be a great little case study as it is focused at such a local scale. The actual piece that ran on Radio 4 PM (tues 25 mar 08) might be available as a podcast too. But this written piece with photos carries the key info and could be a basis for further research - plus the comments make great reading as they help to frame the debate over EU migration. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/pm/2008/03/immigration_1.shtml
